कई बार दिक्कत item में नहीं होती, बस size, color, fitting या model सही नहीं निकलता। ऐसे में दुकान पर “replace कर दीजिए” कह देने से बात साफ़ नहीं होती। English में exchange के लिए सही phrases चुनना थोड़ा फर्क डालता है, खासकर तब जब आप refund नहीं, बल्कि दूसरी चीज़ लेना चाहते हों।
सबसे काम आने वाले phrases
अगर आप खरीदी हुई चीज़ बदलवाना चाहते हैं, तो ये lines सबसे सीधे और natural लगती हैं:
- I’d like to exchange this item.
- Can I exchange this for a different size?
- I want to exchange this for another color.
- Do you have this in a different size?
- Can I exchange it for something else?
इनमें exchange का मतलब है: पुरानी चीज़ वापस देकर दूसरी चीज़ लेना। यह शब्द दुकानों में काफी common है। अगर आप बस “return” बोलेंगे, तो सामने वाला refund की तरफ भी सोच सकता है। इसलिए अगर आपका intent बदलवाने का है, तो exchange बोलना ज़्यादा साफ़ रहता है।
अगर आप size या color बदलवाना चाहते हैं, तो specific होना बेहतर है। उदाहरण के लिए:
- I’d like to exchange this shirt for a larger size.
- Can I exchange these shoes for a smaller size?
- I want to exchange this jacket for a black one.
यहाँ for के बाद वह चीज़ आती है जो आप लेना चाहते हैं। यही structure दुकान में बहुत काम आता है।
जब item damaged हो या mistake हुई हो
कभी-कभी exchange की वजह size नहीं होती, बल्कि product खराब निकलता है या गलत item मिल जाता है। तब आप कह सकते हैं:
- This item is damaged. Can I exchange it?
- I received the wrong item. Can I exchange it?
- This is not the one I ordered. I’d like to exchange it.
इन phrases का tone neutral और polite है। आप किसी पर इल्ज़ाम नहीं लगा रहे, बस problem बता रहे हैं। दुकानों और customer service में यही approach ज़्यादा ठीक रहती है।
अगर आप return policy के बारे में पूछना चाहते हैं, तो सीधे यह भी कह सकते हैं:
- What is your exchange policy?
- How long do I have to exchange this item?
- Can I exchange it without the bill?
यहाँ exchange policy एक useful phrase है। यह पूछने से आपको पता चल जाता है कि item बदला जा सकता है या नहीं, और क्या नियम हैं।
छोटी-छोटी बात जो sentence को natural बनाती है
कई learners कहते हैं, “I want change this.” यह English में incomplete लगता है। change और exchange एक जैसे नहीं हैं। दुकान में item बदलवाने के लिए exchange ज़्यादा सही word है।
एक और common pattern है Can I…? या I’d like to…। ये दोनों polite हैं। अगर आप cashier या staff से बात कर रहे हैं, तो I want to exchange this भी समझ आ जाएगा, लेकिन I’d like to exchange this थोड़ा softer और more polite लगता है।
अगर बातचीत आगे बढ़े, तो staff यह पूछ सकता है:
- Do you have the receipt?
- Was it purchased today?
- Would you like a different size or a different item?
ऐसे सवालों के लिए आप short जवाब भी दे सकते हैं:
- Yes, here is the receipt.

अगर आपको price difference देना हो, तो staff कह सकता है कि नया item थोड़ा महँगा है। तब आप सुन सकते हैं:
- There is a price difference.
- You’ll need to pay the difference.
यह बहुत सामान्य situation है, इसलिए “difference” शब्द पहचान लेना अच्छा रहता है।
