कपड़े ट्राय करते समय सबसे आम बात यही होती है: size ठीक नहीं बैठता। कभी shirt थोड़ी tight होती है, कभी shoes में जगह कम पड़ती है, और कभी shop assistant को साफ़ बताना पड़ता है कि आपको एक size बड़ा या छोटा चाहिए। ऐसे समय बहुत लंबा वाक्य बोलने की ज़रूरत नहीं होती। छोटे, साफ़ phrases ज़्यादा काम आते हैं।
जब size बदलवाना हो
आप सीधे कह सकते हैं:
- Do you have this in a larger size?
- Do you have this in a smaller size?
- Can I try one size up?
- Can I try one size down?
इन वाक्यों में larger size और smaller size बिल्कुल सीधे और polite लगते हैं। one size up और one size down भी बहुत natural हैं, खासकर तब जब आप fitting room में हों या किसी दुकान में जल्दी बात करनी हो।
अगर आप shirt, jeans, dress या shoes जैसी चीज़ खरीद रहे हैं, तो item के साथ size माँगना और भी आसान हो जाता है:
- Do you have this shirt in a medium?
- Do you have these shoes in size 8?
- Do you have this in the next size up?
यहाँ next size up का मतलब है एक size बड़ा। यह phrasing खासकर तब उपयोगी होती है जब आपको exact size नहीं पता, लेकिन जो पहना है वह थोड़ा छोटा लग रहा है।
जब जो पहना है वह fit नहीं हो रहा
कई बार आपको नया size माँगने से पहले यह कहना पड़ता है कि current size fit नहीं हो रहा। तब ये phrases काम आते हैं:
- This is too tight. Do you have a bigger size?
- This is a bit loose. Do you have a smaller size?
- The fit is not right. Can I try another size?
- It doesn’t fit me properly. Could I get one size bigger?
Too tight और a bit loose रोज़मर्रा की shopping English में बहुत common हैं। The fit is not right थोड़ा neutral और polite है, इसलिए यह salesperson के साथ आराम से बोला जा सकता है।
अगर आप department store, clothing shop या footwear store में हैं, तो इस तरह बोलना बिल्कुल natural लगेगा। खासकर shoes के लिए bigger size या smaller size पूछना आसान रहता है:

कभी-कभी लोग blunt सुनाई देने से बचना चाहते हैं। ऐसे में soft phrases बेहतर होते हैं:
- Excuse me, could you help me with a different size?
- Would it be possible to get a larger size?
- Can you check if you have another size?
ये phrases थोड़े polite हैं और especially तब अच्छे लगते हैं जब सामने वाला staff busy हो। अगर आप shopping English में confidence बनाना चाहते हैं, तो size पूछने के साथ-साथ दुकान में shopping के लिए आसान English phrases भी देख सकते हैं।
एक छोटी सी practical बात
bigger और larger दोनों size के लिए इस्तेमाल हो सकते हैं, लेकिन clothes और shoes की दुकान में larger size और bigger size दोनों सुनाई देते हैं। बस इतना ध्यान रखें कि big का उपयोग चीज़ों के लिए होता है, लोगों के लिए नहीं। इसलिए a bigger size बोलना सही है, लेकिन a big size बोलना awkward लगेगा।
अगर cashier या helper पूछे What size are you?, तो आप short reply दे सकते हैं:
- I’m usually a medium.
- I need a size larger than this.
- I think I need one size up.
