- Sorry, I didn't understand.
- Could you say that again, please?
- Sorry, can you repeat that?
- I didn't catch that.
इनमें didn't catch that बहुत common है। इसका tone friendly और natural होता है। यह formal भी नहीं लगता, और बहुत भारी भी नहीं। Office, class, दुकान, या casual conversation — कई जगह काम आ जाता है।
अगर आपको किसी एक part पर doubt है, तो पूरा sentence दोबारा बोलने के बजाय specific clarification माँगना ज़्यादा useful होता है:
- What does _"budget freeze"_ mean?
- Do you mean next Monday?
- Sorry, what was the last word?
ऐसे सवाल दिखाते हैं कि आप सुन रहे थे, बस एक हिस्सा clear नहीं हुआ।
जब बोलने की speed problem हो
कभी-कभी शब्द आसान होते हैं, लेकिन speed तेज़ होती है। तब यह कहना ठीक रहता है:
- Could you speak a little slower, please?
- Please speak more slowly.
- Sorry, you're speaking too fast for me.
यहाँ for me बहुत direct लेकिन rude नहीं लगता। अगर आप very polite रहना चाहते हैं, तो पहला वाला phrase ज़्यादा safe है।
अगर आप meeting या class में हैं, तो यह भी बोल सकते हैं:
- Could you repeat the last part?
- Can you explain that one more time?
इन phrases का फायदा यह है कि सामने वाला समझ जाता है कि पूरी बातचीत नहीं, सिर्फ़ एक हिस्सा miss हुआ है।
जब शब्द तो समझ आते हैं, लेकिन मतलब नहीं
कभी आप सुनते हैं, पर context clear नहीं होता। ऐसे में यह कहना बेहतर है:
- Sorry, I don't quite follow.
- I'm not sure I understand what you mean.
- Could you explain that in another way?
I don't quite follow थोड़ा soft लगता है। यह सीधे-सीधे "I don't understand" से कम कठोर है। Professional बातचीत में यह often अच्छा option बनता है।
कभी-कभी सबसे useful phrase यही होता है:
- Could you give me an example?
अगर सामने वाला abstract बात कर रहा है, तो example मांगने से बात तुरंत साफ़ हो जाती है।
एक छोटा practical rule
अगर आप बार-बार वही बात नहीं समझ पा रहे, तो एक ही sentence को कई बार repeat करने की कोशिश करने के बजाय तीन चीज़ों में से कोई एक माँगिए: repeat, slow down, या explain differently. यही काम कम awkward, ज़्यादा useful होता है।
उदाहरण के लिए:
- Sorry, could you say that again more slowly?
- I didn't catch the second part.
- Could you explain that differently?
ऐसे phrases सीखते समय English में किसी से दोबारा कहने के लिए क्या बोलें भी देख सकते हैं, क्योंकि वहाँ repetition माँगने के और natural तरीके दिए गए हैं। अगर आपकी दिक्कत pronunciation सुनने में भी आती है, तो Hindi speakers के लिए English pronunciation practice भी मदद कर सकता है।
क्या न बोलें
What?
