जब किसी से politely कुछ कहना हो, किसी की ability की बात करनी हो, या किसी past possibility का ज़िक्र करना हो, तब could अक्सर काम आता है। लेकिन Hindi speakers इसे सिर्फ “सकता था” या “कर सकता था” समझकर रुक जाते हैं। असल में इसका इस्तेमाल इससे थोड़ा wider है, और context के हिसाब से meaning बदलती है।
Could का basic idea
Could कई situations में आता है, लेकिन सबसे पहले इसे एक simple helper word की तरह देखना बेहतर है। यह अकेले पूरा meaning नहीं देता; यह sentence के बाकी हिस्से के साथ मिलकर tone बनाता है।

ध्यान रखें: यह सवाल की तरह लिखा जाता है, लेकिन मतलब request का होता है।
Past ability के लिए could
जब किसी व्यक्ति की पुरानी ability बतानी हो, तब could का use होता है।
- When I was a student, I could read fast.
- He could swim very well as a child.
- We could finish the work on time.
यहाँ sentence past समय की बात कर रहा है। लेकिन हर past action के लिए could नहीं आता। अगर कोई specific action हुआ था, तो अक्सर was able to या simple past चाहिए होता है। इसलिए could को हमेशा “past” का general replacement मत मानिए।
Possibility और uncertainty

Spelling में ध्यान दें: could not का contraction couldn’t होता है. इसमें l नहीं बोला जाता। कई learners इसे लिखते समय confuse करते हैं, इसलिए शब्द को साफ़ याद रखना ज़रूरी है।
कुछ common mistakes
एक common गलती यह है कि लोग हर जगह could को ability वाला past समझ लेते हैं। उदाहरण के लिए:
